Leaving Africa!

Today - in 3 hours - I will be leaving Zambia. The journey has come to an end! Surprisingly there is not much sadness that I feel as I depart from this place. Maybe it's because I know this is not the end. Maybe it's because I know it's only the beginning to what God has planned for my life here. Maybe it's because I know I haven't left anything behind and I'm taking a very big piece of Africa, of Zambia, and of the people with me in my heart.

Ephesians 3:20 - Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generation, for ever and ever! Amen.

The Last Days!

This was our taste of fall in Zambia!

Today is our last days at the WHIZ Guest House. We leave Thursday morning for Livingston and will be flying out on Monday morning to head HOME for our 27 hour travel (too long if you ask me)!

I CANNOT believe it has gone so fast! There are so many different emotions. I'm devastated at the thought of saying good-bye to the Guest House staff! ...at the same time I am excited to go to Livingston for our adventures and can't wait to give my dad a BIG hug at the Indianapolis airport on Tuesday! I told him that the first stop we will make is going to be at Starbucks for a coffee frappuccino!

God and I are going to have a lot to go through together as I return to America. He has CHANGED my heart and my life completely here in Zambia! But I am excited to bring my new self back to the States to empower those around me! I am so thankful that God promises me that his presence is EVERYWHERE I go!

Dreams

The five of us went to an orphanage on Saturday about 45 minutes away! It was an AWESOME experience! The orphanage was beautiful and one of the nicest ones in the area. Despite the accommodating facilities the children were the best part!

This is Thomas! He is very sick : ( I loved spending time with him though!

Seeing these children lying in their wooded, block beds has molded my dreams and visions for my future. My dream is to care for orphans and vulnerable children, wherever that is! I don't know how God is going to use these dreams in my future, but I'm excited to see!

Proverbs 31:8-8 - Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

The orphanage is right down the street from where we are staying and over the past couple of weeks I have spent many hours there playing with the kids and investing in their lives. I have FALLEN IN LOVE with the children there! But I have realized that going to the orphanage makes me feel every emotion you can think of: happy, angry, joyful, frustrated. The children radiate with euphoric smiles and are unaware of their situation that will affect their lives! I feel so thankful that these children are in safe homes and have food to eat, but it devastates me to think that they do not have consistent people in their lives. So many volunteers, including myself, come in and out of the house - it's frustrating to know that they won't have a supportive family through every season of their lives.

But through my brokenness I am learning what it means when God adopted me into his family!

Ephesians 1:4-6 - For he chooses us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will - to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

I haven't seen a city in so long! It was so great to be around an urban setting again!

They were screaming, yelling, and jumping up and down when we arrived! Then they sang to us and performed a skit! It was one of the best moments of my trip to Zambia!

Of course we shopped a lot! The homemade crafts from the Zambians were so beautiful! I wanted to take everything back to America!

Just waiting! ...we are used to it by now, after 2 months of being in the slow Zambian culture!

The Lord is so good! He has protected us and kept us safe during our travels to Lusaka. We have 2 weeks remaining and 10 more days at the Guest House. It's going to be the HARDEST thing I will ever do the day I have to leave Zambia! My life has completely changed and I'm not ready to face the American culture after seeing so much pain and suffering! But I can get through anything because GOD is my source of power!!!

This week: I will go to the orphanage tomorrow and hopefully some home visits to AIDS patients in the villages later this week. I have lots of papers to write and things to get done as we wrap up the semester!

Praise the Lord for His love endures forever!

3 Weeks Remaining!

We have 3 weeks left, 23 days, and I don't know how many hours! Our time is dwindling! I'm praying that God will give me an extra boost of PASSION and LOVE for the Zambians and the girls on our team!

God has done so much on this trip and MY LIFE IS FOREVER CHANGED! I pray that he will continue to CHANGE my life, even in the last weeks!

This week: Monday I am going on Home-based Care Visits to AIDS patients in the villages. On Tuesday I am going to a near-by orphanage as well as Dr. Jain's clinic. On Wednesday we are going to Lusaka until Sunday evening! We are going to visit some hospitals as well as SHOP!! It's going to be a great week - all to the glory of God!!

Romans 12:11-12 - Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Last Time At Zimba!

Monday and Tuesday were my last days working at Zimba Mission Hospital! It's weird to think that things are coming to an end. We have less than 4 weeks left! I can't even believe it! There are days that I'm really ready to come home, but then there are others that I get SO SAD thinking about leaving!

Regardless, the remaining 26 days will be the BEST!! I'm sure of it!

I'm so thankful for what God has done in my life in Zambia! He has definitely ruined my life - in a good way!

Psalm 113:5-8 - Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of their people. Praise the Lord!

Zambia Independence Day!!

October 24, 1964 -- The day Zambia declared independence from Great Britain. It was such a privilege for us to share this exciting day with the Zambian people! It was so fun!

Today I did clinical hours at St. Martin, a hospice in Choma. Behind the facility is a school for orphan children where I spent the last half of the morning. Out of 120 children who are enrolled, 95 have HIV/AIDS and all are vulnerable. The program is for children who do not have any where to go in the afternoons, after attending their community school in the mornings. There are also children who are too young to go to school, so they are there for most of the day. Fred, Esther, and Nelly are the little ones I really connected with and immediately fell in love with!

I had so much fun playing with them! They all speak English so it was easy to interact with them and play games. We played hide-and-seek, red rover, had story time, and I taught them "Every Move I Make" (even with the hand motions)!

Like always, it was so hard to leave because I quickly was attached to the children! It was painful to leave because I left a piece of my heart there! ...and I still can't stop thinking about them!

Philippians 4:19 - And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

St. Malumba

We toured St. Malumba, the one and only school for special needs children in all of Zambia. It was such an amazing experience! All of the kids were so excited that we were visiting. We even caused many disruptions in the classroom for the mentally delayed children.

Socks was a bad dog on our walk. She almost got hit by 3 cars - so I carried her home. I was not going to be responsible for our pup getting hurt!

Joshua, the baby I got to hold during the AIDS education program in Zimba. It was the best two hours! His mom wanted me to take him back to America with me. That was hard to hear because I wish I could!

This sign has become REALITY. I will never forget Naomi and Georgian! They have changed my life!

I played with the children from the community school next to where we were doing the AIDS education program for a couple of hours! It was so fun, but they mostly just stared at me the whole time, as you can see in this picture!

THIS WEEK - On Monday and Tuesday I will be going to Dr. Jane's surgical clinic right down the road as well as the Choma Hospice to do community hours. On Wednesday we will have class and then are traveling to Chikankata. It is the home for one of the world's biggest AIDS research center. We are anticipating our trip to their facilities to have a deeper understanding of AIDS and how to better care for our patients here in Africa.

Last week, our food distribution adventure. It felt like we were off-roading, but ironically we were on the road the whole time! They are just that bad!

The Lord Gives and Takes Away

Despite any hard situation I may face, the sunrise always reminds me of God's promise.

God sent me to Zambia to serve, to bear the burdens of the Zambians, and to see him more clearly. For the past two days I was at Zimba Mission Hospital. I will never be the same after those two days. The things I saw, the devastation that I witnessed, and the heartbreak that I feel is overwhelming.

The first day I was the Pediatric and Maternal Ward. It was challenging but I enjoyed every minute! This is the place that God created me for and no matter how hard it is to care for the sick children, it is where I my heart is closest to God!

Job 1: 21 says "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." During the last two days, the Lord has definitely given and taken away! On Monday he gave me the opportunity to delivered a baby!!! It was such an incredible experience! I feel privileged to be the first person to introduce the beautiful baby boy to the world!

But not everything at Zimba was joyful. That same day I cared for Naomi, a 6 year-old little girl who had stage IV AIDS. She was severely malnourished. The next day I found out that she passed away during the night. It is really hard to grasp the reality that she is gone, but no matter how difficult it is I am comforted with God's faithfulness. No matter the difficult situations I come across in Zambia, it is only a way for me to draw closer to God! I am thankful for the time I was given to be with Naomi. I feel so much peace and comfort to know that she is not suffering anymore.

God is so good and like Job, I will praise him through the good and bad!

Our group visited the village behind the complex and we had a blast playing with the children! I fell in love with Kanku! I held her for the couple of hours we were there and could sense that she just wanted to be loved! My heart is breaking for the Zambian children! There are so many illnesses among them and so many needs!

All I can do is pray that I can bring the light of Jesus to their lives!

Anticipation!

This week we visited a Choma Community School. They have 370 kids for 7 teachers. They do not have books for everyone so they write on this board every day for the children to see the sentence structures.

This is a class room. During the rainy season they fit under ONE half-roof building.

Ice cream party! We have a new appreciate for our education. It's a privilege, not a right in Zambia.

The two week mark is approaching us and it is hard to believe! Every day the team is getting to know each other better! We are having a lot of fun, sometimes maybe a little too much fun! (not possible, right?) When we are not studying we are playing games, watching movies, doing workout videos in the hallway, or going on long walks!

These two weeks have also had its challenges. I am feeling apprehensive about starting clinicals in the hospital. I feel like jumping out of my skin - I can not wait to serve the patients God brings before me in Zambia!!!! On Monday and Tuesday I will be traveling to Zimba Mission Hospital for two days of clinical. This will be the first time I will have my own patients in a third world country! The only thing I can do is to get on my knees in desperation for God to be my hands to heal my patient's sickness, to be my words to bring hope, and to be in the love that I give away!

Psalm 103:1-5 - Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

It's been one week! It's been a great week and I can't wait to be here for 9 more! It's just incredible to think about how much I have learned, and how much more God is going to do! Doesn't that just make you smile?! I'm smiling!

So, tonight was the BIGGEST blessing of all! We went on a walk along a different road than we have in the past; as we are walking back 10 kids from a distance are screaming, "Come here, come here, come here!" (If you haven't noticed by now, white people are pretty much famous in this area and we are magnets to children, which is totally OKAY with me!!!) But it was getting too dark and we had to go home so we couldn't go see the kids. But I'm DYING inside because I'm craving to play with any little ones! Anyway, they finally caught up to us and they walked us back to the complex. We just laughed the whole time! Despite how much fun we had, reality is starting to sink in more and more. For the first time, I was interacting with REAL poverty stricken children. These kids were covered in dirt. The nurse in me also noticed health concerns with these children such as their skin and teeth, which made me believe they were malnourished. It's just incredible to me to think about what these children do not have, while at the same time their laugher and smiles light up my life!

As much as it hurts to be around these conditions, I have to keep telling myself that GOD loves the little children more than I EVER COULD! Right?!

God is good! This morning we had an incident with a black mamba snake, which is one of Africa's most dangerous and poisonous snakes. We went on our usual morning walk when one of the girls on the team slipped and fell as she was walking out of the Guest House. Right next to her hand was a tiny black mamba. She slowly got up and got our attention. Beth, a WHIZ staff member took a huge rock and placed it on top of the snake and killed it! We didn't know at the time it was a black mamba or the degree of danger we were in.

We pray for continued protection for all the girls on the team! It's scary to think about the things that we can come across but I KNOW that God has his shield over us no matter what happens!

Psalm 91: 11-13 - For he will command his angels concerning you to guard our in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

Beginning To Feel At Home!

We are being hit hard with classes and on top of that we have been having meeting after meeting after meeting this week with WHIZ staff. We have certain educational sessions with each individual program WHIZ sponsors so that we will be fully prepared to work with them for our Community Health hours. The programs are great and we are really excited to get started! One program is Hope for Children, which is working to sponsor children who are malnourished, don't have money to go to school, or do not have families to care for them. We have also been learning about a program called Based Care, which we will be given the privilege of going on visits to villages to care for HIV/AIDS patients.

It has been an absolutely exhausting first couple of days with little breaks and not a lot of time to do homework. Regardless, we are enjoying what we are learning about and are anxiously waiting for the time when the visits to the hospital, villages, and orphanages begin!

Also, even though it has only been four days since we arrived - we are beginning to feel right at home! The staff at the Guest House are amazing and we have been having so much fun with them! Our beds are comfortable, our meals are fabulous, the bathrooms are clean, our showers are warm, and our toilets work! So, we can't complain about anything...not even being tired and getting used to the time change!

First Day Of Classes!

Today was our first day of classes! My rotation this semester is Community Health and Leadership & Management. Both of these classes require a large amount of hours spent in the community, and I couldn't think of a better place to spend that time than in Zambia!

We have so many opportunities and great ideas for this semester. Our options for clinical hours include serving in the Zimba Hospital, assisting at an orphanage, going to villages to educate the individuals, and getting involved with the WHIZ programs (such as Hope for Children and Reach for Life). I'm hoping to develop my own program as well which would include a mentoring program for young teen girls in my church.

These experiences are going to be intense - I could already feel the emotions rising during our discussions. It's such a hurting world and it is hard to discuss the situations these people face on a daily basis. I know I have so much ahead for me to learn - considering I have yet to witnessed the core of poverty. Regardless, I have witnessed one thing - even though the Zambian people do not have much, they are so loving and caring. Many times while interacting with Zambians I noticed that they initially stare at me in wonder, but as soon as I say hi and smile at them, I always receive a beaming smile in return. I have a lot to learn from the Zambian people!

Market Day

Today we went to the market and walked around Choma to get more acquainted with the city. We bought a chitenge which is a piece of cloth that the Zambian women use to carry their children on their back, carry food, wear as a skirt, or use as a blanket. It's the thing to have around here - so finally we are a part of the culture and are in style!! It was a fun experience but very overwhelming at the same time. Image a group of eight white Americans walking through a huge street full of Africans - especially a blonde. We stuck out! Regardless, it was a great experience and it opened my eyes to the Zambian culture and way of life in a very real way!

Today I went to church where I will be attending for the next 10 weeks. The four hour service was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it...yes, every minute! These people know how to love God! They know how to praise God! They have such strong faith that is so admirable!

And I already made a friend - Eliah! He is 2 years old and I held him while we stood in line, shaking hands with the whole congregation. Oh man! I get attached so easily! This may be bad!

We Arrived Safely!!

After 2 days of brushing my teeth in public bathrooms, sleeping in all kinds of interesting positions in the airport seats, and traveling on the bumpy roads of Zambia - we have finally arrived to what is now called home for the next 10 weeks!

Everything is absolutely incredible! I'm already in love with everything and everybody here! The WHIZ (World Hope International Zambia) Guest House is amazing! The people are so intentional! I can't wait to invest in them more and hear their stories!

The bus ride from Livingston to Choma was already a slap in the face. I always saw pictures of huts and the way the African people live daily, but seeing it first-hand was a whole new thing! It became reality to me that these people live there and it's all they have! But really - all they have! I can't explain it and can't even portray the things we saw on the bus ride! But nonetheless, as I was praying during that ride - I became absolutely in AWE of God! I'm in awe of God's plan for my life - in awe of the love of God and his people of every nation and tribe - in awe of how big our world is and the fact that God designed it all - in awe of God's presence - in awe of that God placed me in Zambia, Africa to serve Him!

Here we go! The journey has just begun and I can't wait for God to change my life completely!

Psalm 72:12-13 - For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death.

Praise God for who he is and for loving the Zambian people way more than I ever could!

It's About time!

It's finally time! After months of talking about studying abroad in Zambia - it is finally here! I'm ready to get on the plane! I'm sick of sitting through orientation. I'm tired of talking with others about my plans. I'm desperately ready to go on this adventure and I'm ready to give God full control over these next 10 weeks!
